Broadly defined, the sport of Olympic bicycling is actually made up of a number of specific events, some very different from another. Road and track racing have been around for a long time -- both present at the first modern games in Athens in 1896 -- while BMX and mountain bike events are both relatively new. Mountain bike racing made its debut in Atlanta in 1996, and the 2008 Beijing games marked the first time that BMX racing was an official Olympic event.
